huerto roma verde, MEXICO. april 2022.
This work calls for attention to a global issue, it wants to transmit the feeling of anguish about an imminent issue in Mexico (the land of corn) where the biodiversity of corn ( Maiz) seed is currently at risk to disappear due to the abandonment of the Mexican countryside with low interest of young Mexican rural generations who rather keep working on a car wash in LA or a kitchen in Brooklyn pursuing their American dream than continuing a millenary legacy of preserving our seeds and multi species of corn plants, the heritage of our ancient cultures that keep us healthy and nurtured.
Alejandro introduces himself into a container that slowly fills up with popcorn (transgenic and imported from the USA) where almost to the point of drowning he finds an exit. We are at risk of being left with only 4 kinds of corn spread worldwide (transgenic, dependent on industrial chemical agriculture, high in carbs and low in nutrition). At the same time it’s important to pay attention to the bad quality of tortillas responsible for diminishing people’s health in Mexico, this is caused by ignorance from consumers in respect to what represents the 50% of the calories and calcium dietary input of Mexican people. |
